The People of San Luis Rio Colorado - They Have Captured Our Hearts
Welcome to this ministry website. We are amazed at the work God is doing here in this city. God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. As we come together with a purpose to share the gospel to a lost and lonely world, our "little" becomes "much" as God blends our talents, gifts and abilities together. Many have partnered with us on this amazing journey. We thank God for each of you.
In 2010, God opened the door for us to minister here. So much has been accomplished. To Him be the glory!! We know we have seen just a glimpse of what He will do in SLRC. God has much more in store for us as we follow His leading one step at a time. Please click on the menu pages above to see the exciting things God is doing in this city. We ask you to pray for this ministry and should God lead, we look forward to having you join our team and partner with us. Together we can do great things for God's Kingdom.

San Luis Rio Colorado - Mexico
Once the end of the mighty Colorado River, this city used to be a port of entry for paddle wheelers going up river to cities in the United States. The water that once nurtured this port no longer flows because of the many city and agriculture uses upstream.
This city is home to many of Mexico's migrant workers who move north from towns in the south seeking employment. Thousands of these people legally cross over the border and back each day to work in the United States. Many of these people are very poor living in shacks and doing without the many necessities of life - food, clothing, and adequate shelter. |
We Choose To Make a Difference
Starfish Story
A young man standing next to the ocean was asked:
“...what are you doing?". The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”
“I guess I should have asked: WHY are you throwing starfish in the ocean?". “The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them in then they’ll die.”
“But, young man, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. There must be thousands of them on this beach alone. You can’t possibly hope to make a difference!”
The young man listened politely, then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, “To THAT one, it made a difference.”

2020-2021 Ministry Focus - Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food Program
For the poor and underserved living South of the Canal in San Luis Rio Colorado, there are four basic needs - Food - Water - Hygiene and Shelter. In 2020, the people of San Luis have been hit hard with COVID 19 virus. Many small businesses have closed. Many people have lost their jobs and the upcoming agriculture season in the United States in uncertain for those living in San Luis Rio Colorado who depend upon employment in the U.S. fields. Many of the families Hearts Empowering the Poor (HEP) has ministered to have been sick and recovered from the Virus. Two of the families which HEP has built casitas for have family members who have died from the virus. Daily parents struggle to feed their children.
HEP's ministry focus in 2020-2021 is Vecinos Ayudando a Vecinos or Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food and Hygiene Program. We are working with four Pastors who minister South of the Canal in Colonia Topahue. Jesus es el Pan de Vida - Jesus es el Senor - Manatial de Vida
Ministering to the kids in Colonia Topahue
HEP is honored to support many soup kitchens, churches and children's programs in Colonia Topahue.
PAN DE VIDA is a soup kitchen run by a group of organized volunteers living in San Luis Rio Colorado and Somerton, Arizona. Pan de Vida sits on 10 lots - about one acre - at the very most Southern area South of the Canal in proximity to many of the families Hearts Empowering the Poor has built homes. The majority of these families around Pan de Vida have no electricity water or sewer services.
Every Saturday, the local volunteers gather and feed between 100 and 150 children and adults. For many of these families it is the only hot meal they eat. The volunteers, through the assistance of a food bank in Somerton, Arizona, prepare a bag of groceries for each family to take home including fresh vegetables and fruits.
This volunteer group has built a large multipurpose building, a bathroom with showers, and a large non-potable water cistern for water storage. Through the generosity of our donors, Hearts Empowering the Poor provided the funding to get electricity to the site. Hearts Empowering the Poor has also provided funding to build a commercial kitchen adjacent to the multipurpose building.
JESUS ES EL SENOR also feeds the children and their families in Colonia Topahue weekly on Saturday. Partnering with Hands Extended, a non-profit organization located in Yuma focusing on education, Jesus es el Senor has the only computer lab in Colonia Topahue where the children come during the week to get help with their homework, tutoring and learn basic computer skills. Jesus es el Senor also has music classes for the children weekly.
MANATIAL DE VIDA hosts a monthly movie night for the children of Topahue. The kids enjoy a movie, light snack and time hanging out together.
Hearts Empowering the Poor is grateful to our donors who financially support these programs for the children living in Colonia Topahue. We are also grateful to the Pastors and volunteers who are committed to providing these programs for the children and their families.
